At Laser Processing Research Center, we use Metal Doctor to repair different metal component and product.
The Metal Doctor supply measures approximately 19" x 17" x 12"; weighs approximately 70 pounds, and operates on a standard 220 VAC, 20-amp circuit, making the equipment both portable and



versatile. The Advanced Metal Doctor equipment has been CE certified and all new ESD systems come with a 1-year parts and labor warranty against faulty workmanship and component failure.

Laser Processing Research Center offers the user two types of ESD torch/applicator tools. All torch/applicators are equipped with an internal water-cooling system giving the system a near 100% duty cycle. The basic torch/applicator head, primarily for coating applications (Cermets), utilizes our patented "oscillation-rotation" motion to vastly reduce electrode "run-away" and facilitate the application of ESD coatings to sharp edges and complex geometries. This torch is very compatible with both hand and automated applications.

For the customers wishing to make heavy build-ups, perform metallic repairs on metallic substrates, or perform joining welds, Laser Processing Research Center offers a "rotation only" torch, having infinite rotational speed adjustment between 500 and 1500 RPM. The "rotation only" torch is most frequently used when a thick deposit of metallic electrode is being made on a metallic substrate. Typical applications include: Dimensional restoration; repair of small nicks and dings, and repair of small cracks and corrosion indications.

Laser Processing Research Center(LPRC) has been very successful in integrating Metal Doctor(Electro-Spark Deposition,I.e.ESD) equipment with a variety of automatic and semi-automatic devices, including robot arms, three axis coordinate tables and a variety of custom designed devices. All automated systems utilize the basic "off-the-shelf" ESD system, or variations of that system, adapted to meet the needs of the customer.

Process Characteristics

Metal Doctor alloying is a thin film coating , where accumulated energy in a bank of capacitors is released in controlled bursts as brief as 1/1000 of a second.
The coating material is in the form of an electrode of length 30-mm.
When electrode is brought near to the work piece, an electric arc is struck generating temperatures in the range of 10000 to 12000℃.

Size of the area of discharge is only 0.0001 sq.inch.
Substrate bulk properties are not affected during deposition as the temperature of the substrate remains below 50℃.
The first layer is a mixture of base material and the electrode and in the subsequent layers the electrode material percentage increases up to pure electrode material level.
The power supply produces a variable direct current upto about 50A and voltage less than 25V.
Maximum achievable thickness is 2500 microns.
The most common type of electrode is a cemented tungsten carbide. The wear resistance of the coatings depends on the coating continuity, thickness and the nature of coating.
